By providing disadvantaged young people with new skills and opportunities, our Community Leaders programme helps to create a positive cycle of involvement, attainment and youth leadership at the heart of children’s communities.
Funding from Well Doncaster supports a programme of training and support for young people and local partner organisations. Together, they tackle social issues using sport and physical activities to lead change through locally led provision and youth led commissioning.
Community Leaders work in locations, and with groups, where engagement in physical activity is low – where social issues, such as poor physical and mental wellbeing, poverty, low attainment in education and high levels of unemployment, are seen.
Youth led change
Our Community Coaches provide critical support to keep children from families on low income safe, fit and fed in their communities beyond the school day. Working with Community Leaders, we deliver more activities that simply increase the number of active hours children participate in.
As an anchor organisation, we work in partnership with young people and their communities to provide solutions that are driven by their lived experience.
Locally based partnerships
Working with local providers, Active Fusion trains young people aged 13-21 to take a lead through our Fusion Leaders model. Each locality form a Fusion Leaders Team, led by young people, to steer and develop emerging activity with local supporting adults.
Teams act as Advocates and Commissioners representing the needs and interests of children and families from within the community. Our Fusion Fund offers the opportunity for each locally based group to apply for up to £1,000 to help nurture positive change and sustain provision.
Pathways for young people
Community Leaders will complete a Sports Leaders qualification as part of the programme, with qualifications offering pathways to progress into employment through a Community Sport Health Apprenticeship Programme.
